Power floating is done when the concrete is freshly laid and has had a few hours to set. When we float the concrete, it smooths out the surface, which plenty of customers are happy with, especially if they’re not fully aware of the difference between floating and polishing.
Now, if you’re after a polished finish, that’s a different process. Polishing is done with a diamond grinder, but only after the concrete has fully cured, usually at least 28 days after being poured. You’ve got options here; you can go for a matte look, an exposed aggregate finish, or a high-sheen, glossy result. It all depends on the style you’re after.
A properly finished garage floor, whether power floated or polished, is strong enough to handle parked vehicles, but certain factors can affect its durability. Power floated concrete provides a smooth but porous surface that can develop dusting, stains, and tire marks over time, especially if left unsealed. Polished concrete is more resistant to wear but can still be prone to rubber tire marks, oil stains, and, if highly polished, may become slippery when wet. Heavy vehicles or sharp objects like jack stands can cause minor dents or chipping on either finish. To prevent damage, applying a sealer or epoxy coating is recommended, as it helps protect against oil spills, chemicals, and tire marks while making cleaning easier. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning spills promptly and using rubber mats under heavy equipment, will also help extend the life of the floor, ensuring it remains in good condition for years.
